Ninja Networking 101

by Karen Frank, Linguistic Alchemist and Networking Expert

If you’ve been to a mixer anywhere you know how everyone else is doing it because you’ve seen it over and over again. Set yourself apart from the others - and up for success - with these three simple tips.

Start with a plan of attack. You need to know what you want to get out of the event. Decide in advance who specifically you would like to meet in the next week or so. I always recommend that you choose someone who would be a good partner or strategic alliance for you. When you go to the event, be sure to remember to ask if people know the person you would like to meet. You also need to plan what to say when you find someone who does. How do you want to be introduced to the person you want to meet. Don’t plan to fail by failing to plan!

Dress the ninja way. I’m all about being yourself goodness knows, but if it’s a formal event don’t show up in sweats and sneakers – even if that’s how you dress when you do what you do. You don’t want to look out of place for the wrong reasons. Wear something that makes you feel fantastic – and wear comfortable shoes. It’s hard to smile and pay attention if your feet hurt. I’d also suggest wearing something with pockets. It’s so much easier to deal with business cards, handshakes and snacks if you have a spare pocket available.

Don’t be invisible. Ninja’s are successful because they are the shadow warriors – you don't know they are there until it’s too late. DON’T do that!! If you are uncomfortable at events like this bring someone with you. You’ll feel so much better introducing them to others while they do the same for you. Remember that your follow up can’t be invisible either. Be sure to calendar time to do the appropriate follow up contacts with those who have expressed an interest to get to know you better!
